Located in the northernmost end of Gyeongsangbuk-do, it is a highland area in the Sobaeksanmaek Mountain Range running southwest. It borders Bonghwa-gun to the east; Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, to the west; Andong-si and Yecheon-gun to the south; and Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do, to the north. Furthermore, it is the transportation hub across the Sobaeksanmaek and Taebaeksanmaek mountain ranges. The land is filled with silty soil in most cases, which is ideal for growing crops. In particular, the mountainous area in the north has sandy loam soil that allows for good drainage and is perfect for growing ginseng and apples.
