Choe Chiwon (崔致遠, 857-?, pen names Goun 孤雲 and Haeun 海雲)
Late Silla period scholar and founder of the Gyeongju Choe clan
At the age of 12, Choe went over to Tang China to further his studies. The first recognition of his work came from a proclamation written against the rebellion of Huang Chao. Then, Choe returned to Silla at the age of 28 (885), and despite being awarded a cabinet position in the 8th year of King Jinseong (894), Choe resigned from this position and retired.
Given his low rank at birth, Choe could not implement his reforms and instead stayed at Gayasan Mountain until his death. One of his works is Gyewon pilgyeong (Plowing the Laurel Grove with a Writing Brush).
