HAEUNDAE-guHistory and Culture

These are the first paleolithic sites to be discovered in Busan, located in Cheongsapo and Haeundae New Town. Their presence traces the history of human activity in Busan to the Paleolithic period, also serving as a crucial reference point in the historical research on Korea-Japan cultural exchange and transmission during the period.
The sites were discovered in December 1992 as part of the Haeundae New Town development project and subjected to a five-month survey period until April 1993. Approximately 300 m apart, the sites are situated on a hilly area about 40–50 m above sea level. About 300 pieces of late Paleolithic artifacts dating back to around 10,000–15,000 years ago were found in these sites. In particular, the Jwa-dong site houses scrapers, denticulates, and core tools, whereas the Jung-dong site shows artifacts from toward the end of the late Paleolithic era, such as stone blades and points.
