History and Culture
Cheonjedan Altar was an altar dedicated to the gods of the sky and mountain whose ceremonies prefaced the rite offered to Mago Halmi. It is a valuable historical material shedding light on the folk religion of Korea. The Historic Documents of Dongha-myeon, Dongnae-bu, also show that the altar doubled as a site for rain ceremonies in times of drought. Some scholars have argued that the altar of Jangsan Mountain has influenced the Japanese Shinto shrine culture; it is said that the shrine culture of Japanese Shintoism originates from Tsushima Island, and Jangsan played a role in the transmission of such cultural practices given its geographical proximity with the island. Even Producer Yi Yang-hoon, a member of KBS Busan TV station and an observer of Japanese Shinto shrine culture, has said that many similarities can be found between Japanese shrines and Jangsan’s altar.
